Martin Eisler & Carlo Hauner

BIOGRAPHY

Carlo Hauner (1927-1997) and Martin Eisler (1913-1977) were the primary designers for the iconic Brazilian furniture company Forma. Their narrative spans four countries (Italy, Austria, Brazil, and Argentina) and several decades. Born in Italy, Hauner moved to Brazil after the second world war. Soon after, he founded a furniture production company and purchased a factory from Lino Ba Bardi, renaming it Móveis Artesanal. Born in Austria, Eisler studied architecture in his country, and immigrated to Argentina due to Eisler’s Jewish heritage and the Nazi annexation of Austria in 1938. There he worked as an architect and furniture designer. In early 1950’s, they met in Sao Paulo. They started to work together in 1953 and soon after changed the company name into Forma, that became one of the biggest names in Brazilian furniture production. Their furniture using Brazilian woods and thin tubular frames entered overseas market. There is much left to discover about the history of this firm, but their exceptional works are already highly sought-after examples of the vibrant modern design movement in Latin America.

カルロ・ハウナー（1927-1997）とマーティン・アイスラー（1913-1977）は、ブラジル・モダンのアイコン的な家具メーカー「Forma」の最初のデザイナーです。イタリア生まれのハウナーは、第二次大戦後にブラジルのサンパウロに移り、間も無く家具作りを始めます。リナ・ボ・バルディから工場を買い取り「Móveis Artesanal」を立ち上げます。一方のアイスラーは、ナチスによるユダヤ人の迫害を逃れ、オーストリアからアルゼンチンに移住し、建築家・家具デザイナーとして働いていました。二人は1950年代初頭にサンパウロで出会い、1953年に協働しはじめると、社名を「Forma」に変更し、間も無くブラジルをリードする家具メーカーになります。ブラジル原産の木材と、細くすっきりとした鉄製のフレームを組み合わせが特徴的な彼らのデザインは、世界にも市場を拡大しました。

たくさんのデザインを手がけたにも関わらず、まだ研究が進んでいない部分も多くある「Forma」ですが、彼らの優れたデザインは、すでに昨今の南米のモダンデザインの人気を押し上げる要因のひとつとなっています。
