José Zanine Caldas

BIOGRAPHY

A self-taught designer, José Zanine Caldas is known to transform wood into magnificently sensual pieces. In 1964, when Brazil was undergoing a military coup, he lost his position at the University of Brasilia and took refuge in the beach town of Nova Viçosa. There he faced the destruction of the Atlantic Forest. Inspired by local craftsmen who carved boats and furniture from fallen trees, he began carving solid furniture from local woods like pequi, acajou and vinhático. Characterized by a greatly organic, sculptural quality, Zanine’s furniture takes full advantage of the cracks and natural curves of the wood. He interfered minimally in the natural forms, leaving alive the memory of the destruction of the forest, reason that gave to the series the name ‘Móveis Denúncia/ Furniture-Denunciation’.

Born in Bahia, Brazil, at the age of 20 Zanine opened an architectural scale model workshop in Rio de Janeiro where he worked with modernist pioneers such as Lucio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer. In 1949, he established ‘Móveis artísticos Z’, a pioneer company for producing furniture using plywood sold in large department stores for the middle class. The furniture is recognized by its structure and design forming curves such as armchairs with arms in the shape of letters of the alphabet and tables with its tops in the shape of boomerangs.

In 1989, he was honored with a comprehensive exhibition of architectural and design work held in the Museum of Decorative Arts at the Louvre Museum and the following year he was awarded the silver medal from the French Academy of Architecture.

ただの木材を見事に美しく繊細な作品へと生まれ変わらせることで知られる、独創的なデザイナーのジョゼ・ザニーネ・カルダス（1919-2001）。1964年、軍事政権下のブラジルで、ブラジリア大学での職を失ったザニーネは、故郷近くのノヴァ・ヴィソサに戻ると、深刻な森林破壊の事実に衝撃を受け、強い環境意識を持った作品を手がけるようになります。倒木から船や家具を彫り出して作る地元の職人にインスピレーションを受け、自らも自身の手で大きな無垢材から家具を彫り出すという、よりベーシックなアプローチからなる作品作りを始めます。主に、ペキーやカシューといった地元で採れる木材を用い、使用する木材のもともとのヒビや割れ、曲線をうまく生かしたザニーネの作品は、オーガニックで彫刻的。彼は、そうした自らの作品群を森林破壊に抗議する意味を込めて「訴える家具」と称しました。

ブラジル・バイーア州に生まれたザニーネは独学で建築やデザインを学び、弱冠20歳にして建築模型を製作するワークショップを開き、ルシオ・コスタやオスカー・ニーマイヤーといった現代建築の巨匠たちと仕事を共にしました。1949年には「Móveis artísticos Z」を立ち上げます。曲線を用いたデザインが特徴の家具を生産し、当時は中流階級向けに販売され、リーディングカンパニーとなりました。

正規の教育を受けていないという理由から、いくつかのプロジェクトの断念を余儀なくされることもあったザニーネでしたが、1989年にパリの装飾博物館で展覧会が開催され、翌年にはフランスの建築アカデミーからシルバーメダルを受賞。1991年に、ルシオ・コスタの擁護により、ブラジル建築士協会より名誉建築士の称号が与えられました。
